You’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard something about AI over the past 6 months. But Why? What’s different now and why is this being talked about so much? Is this going to be another fad that I “have to be a part of” that will eventually be reduced down to a splash in the pan next year? (don’t worry crypto, I think there’s still a future) Well, the answer is no… whether you like it or not, AI is not only here to stay, but it will most likely creep into most aspects of our lives whether we know it or not. Let’s discuss what’s why…
Traditional Artificial intelligence has actually been around since the 1950s, but the AI you’ve been hearing about over the last 6 months is a whole different ballgame. This “newer AI” is called Generative AI, which is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new and original content, such as images, music, or text, by learning patterns and generating outputs that resemble the data it was trained on.
Think of a Chef that needs to make a dish with random stuff from the refrigerator like pickles, hot sauce, marshmallows, and cheese, and somehow it works! The Chef in this example would be the Generative AI and all those ingredients that were available would be the data it was trained on. The good news for all of us that are a little scared of this new reality is the output of these models are not always correct, and I’m sure that dish would be gross, but you get the example….
This new technology has massive implications in our daily lives, and we’re living only in the earliest stages of what will become the norm. Bill Gates recently wrote about this new phase of AI: “The development of [generative] AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other.”😳 To put into view the adoption rate of this new technology, check out this chart that shows how fast ChatGPT alone reached 1M users in comparison to some of the most famous platforms in the world!
😰 Well that’s just great…. so it’s the end of the world?
The first thing I get asked “Is generative AI going to take over the world?” Well, fear not, my friend. Generative AI may have some tricks up its digital sleeve, but it’s not planning to overthrow humanity anytime soon. This is not to say that serious considerations aren’t being taken to ensure our safety, but these creative machines lack true consciousness and understanding. They’re more like those parrots that mimic your voice but have no idea what they’re saying. So, rest easy—we’re not living in a sci-fi movie just yet!
😅 Can it at least do my job for me then?
Alongside all of the FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) you hear these days, there are even more AI products popping up that claim to make our lives easier. And it’s true! One of the powers of AI is that it takes the things that people “have to do” and can do it for them, allowing people to focus on things the “want to do.” Think helping writers block, planning your next vacation, and even teaching you to code.

Who likes dead plants?
Gardening, or just keeping your plants alive, is tough, and there’s a lot more to consider than just when to water. You may not have a green thumb, but you can still get some help keeping your plants healthy from an AI gardening app that utilized something called OCR (optical character recognition).
NatureID is an AI-powered app that can identify, diagnose, and guide you through caring for indoor and outdoor plants. If you want watering reminders, sunlight suggestions, and more for all of your indoor and outdoor plants, download NatureID Plant Identification .
